Imperial Commander heading for King George Chase

Imperial Commander’s handler, Nigel Twiston-Davies, is convinced that the 8 year old will have a better run this year when he once again takes on Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park.

In last year’s King George Chase Imperial Commander had a poor run while Kauto Star won the race for the third successive time. In their most recent contest Imperial Commander, in his first race of the season, lost by a nose to Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase at Haydock.

Twiston-Davies also dismissed the idea that Imperial Commander’s disappointing run last year was due to his lack of staying ability and believes that was just a one-off.

“For some reason he ran badly that day (in the King George Chase), and we still don’t know why,” Twiston-Davies said.

“From a personal angle I’ve never had a problem with the stamina question. He likes the Cheltenham hill and looked as fresh as a daisy the last time he went up there.

“I’m afraid the stamina issue is something that has been whipped up by the Press.”

“The King George is next and I’m really looking forward to it. Kempton is a flat, right-handed course that should suit him. We’ll find out one way or the other on Boxing Day.”

Imperial Commander is currently second favourite, behind Kauto Star, at 5/1 with William Hill for the King George VI Chase.
